Rocks can be slippery, especially when covered in seaweed, so be extra careful when walking around on rocky beaches. Keep an eye on the time, the tides, and the water level. Always be mindful of ocean currents and waves. Water (and the ocean in particular) can be dangerous and safety should be a top priority when exploring tidepools. Tidepools are so much fun, but it’s important to take a few precautions to ensure your kids are safe. Stay safe and come back inland as the tide starts to rise. But make sure to keep your eye on the tide and what the water is doing. Start inland and work your way out as the tide recedes. We recommend going just before low tide to give yourself the maximum amount of time to explore the tidepools. Tide tables are handy charts with helpful low and high tide information. You can take a look at a “tide table” in your area to find low tide times of day and make the most of your visit. Low tide gives you more tidepools to discover and lets you explore much further out on the beach. The best time to visit a tidepool is low tide when the water levels are calm and at their lowest. The Carmel Coast tidepools are pictured here. The Central Coast (the area roughly spanning the coastal region between Point Mugu and Monterey Bay) is a family favorite with amazing tidepools. Some of the best tidepools can be found along the Mendocino Coast, Monterey, Big SUR, Cambria, and all the way down throughout Southern California. Each one is a microcosm – a tiny little rocky world filled with fascinating creatures and sea life. From Highway 1 turn left onto Moonstone Beach Dr. Leffingwell Landing, part of Hearst San Simeon State park, is located at the northern end of Moonstone Beach about two miles north of Cambria. Don't forget to visit our Coastal Discovery Center, jointly operated by the Sanctuary and State Parks! Leffingwell Landing Day Use Area, Hearst San Simeon State Park You'll find the tide pools to the left of the pier, beginning about a quarter mile down the beach. This popular beach is located across Highway One from Hearst Castle near San Simeon. San Luis Obispo County William Randolph Hearst Memorial Beach Docents lead guided tide pool walks and schedules are posted a month in advance. Weston Beach, west and a bit south of the park entrance, is good for tide pooling. Spectacular Point Lobos Sate Reserve is located three miles south of Carmel on Highway 1. Even at higher tides, some of the tide pools here remain exposed. Though just outside the park, Point Pinos is one of the richest tide pool habitats in the world. Tide pools can be found along the rocky beaches next to Sunset all the way to Point Pinos, near the golf course and lighthouse. Continue on Sunset until you reach the ocean. From Highway 1, exit Highway 68 West and turn left on Sunset Drive. These tide pool areas are located in Pacific Grove adjacent to Sunset Drive. Monterey County Point Pinos and Asilomar State Beach The park has a visitor center and offers guided tide pool tours year-round. Take Swift Street west from Highway 1, then West Cliff Drive north until it ends at the state beach. Natural Bridges is located at the north end of Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz County Natural Bridges State Beach The rocky ledges and tide pools are easily accessible but are exposed and visible only during low tides. The tide pools are located 100 yards north of the hostel building. Pigeon Point Lighthouse is located on Highway 1, 20 miles south of Half Moon Bay. Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park From Highway 1 in Moss Beach, turn west onto California Avenue and drive to the end of the road. Pick any one of these great locations to explore tide pools! San Mateo County Fitzgerald Marine Reserveįitzgerald Marine Reserve is home to some of the most diverse and accessible tide pools in the sanctuary.
